Voisin places fourth at X Games slopestyle
Whitefish's Maggie Voisin capped her return to ski slopestyle competition with a fourth-place finish at the Winter X Games in Aspen, Colorado on Friday afternoon.
Voisin, 17, missed the podium by one point, scoring an 84.66 on her final run of the day. Her final attempt included backside 270 out, frontside 270 out, switch left 270 onto the gap rail, right 720 mute, a big left 900 tail, the finished with a switch left 900 mute.
Voisin improved with each of her three runs on the day — 71.33, 83.66, then the 84.66 — but couldn't move out of the fourth-place spot.
She said she's happy with the result in her first competitive event since missing last year with an injury.
"A year ago my goal was to be back at X Games and to ski the best that I could and I did that," Voisin told U.S. Freeskiing. "The fact that I’ve only been jumping for a month now and I was able to put down that run - I’m just super happy to end up where I did."
13-year-old Kelly Sildaru of Estonia took gold, becoming the youngest ever to top an X Games podium.
Voisin took silver in the 2014 X Games. Just 15 years old at the time, she was the youngest skier ever to medal at the X Games.
She was selected to go for gold at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, but she injured her ankle during a training run and was unable to compete. Later that year she suffered a season-ending knee injury at a Dew Tour slopestyle event in Breckenridge, Colo.
This X Games appearance marked her return to the national spotlight.
"I'm so grateful to be back in Aspen for X Games," Voisin posted on Instagram Wednesday. "Day 1 of training is complete and I'm looking forward to the best week of the season."
