Knight edges stacked field at Whitefish Whiteout

A new course for the Whitefish Whiteout ski mountaineering race Saturday challenged racers to climb more than 5,100 vertical feet over four different peaks at Whitefish Mountain Resort.

Edmonton-based racer Peter Knight led wire-to-wire to hold off the pack in a final push across the finish with a time of 1:51:15. Knight clocked the fastest time on the opening ascent up Big Mountain with a lung-busting 27 minutes flat.

A pair of renowned endurance athletes were on Knight’s ski tails all day. Missoula’s Mike Foote place second with a 1:51:47, just a stride ahead of local favorite Ben Parsons.

Bozeman’s Michela Adrian posted the fastest time among women with a 2:14:15.

The new course took racers up Toni Matt to the summit of Big Mountain, over to a bootpack up the steep NBC chute, up Lodi Peak, up Bighorn to the radio towers, then over to the summit of Hellroaring Peak before descending to Hellfire and back to the Big Mountain summit.
