Bulldog wrestlers look to home dual this week

The Bulldogs wrestling team is looking to this week’s home dual after a tough weekend in Eureka.

Whitefish took 11th overall out of the 12 teams competing at the Buzz Lucey Invitational on Saturday. Malik Heydon took fourth place at 160 for the Bulldogs.

Head coach Ryan Boyle said the upside of Saturday’s performance was that after the team’s slow start, a few senior leaders rallied the team and pushed them to finish on a stronger note.

“It was one of those where we hopefully found some leadership and some willingness to come back and battle,” Boyle said. “Chalk it up to experience, get a little better and move on.”

Three wrestlers also traveled to Coeur d’Alene for the Tri-State Tournament, Dakota Flannery, Jack Eisenbarth and Travis Catina. Catina made it to the second day of the tournament but didn’t place after falling to the fourth-seeded wrestler at 205.

“Catina wrestled really well,” Boyle said. “He needs to be in those matches so we understand how to win those when it comes down to the divisional and state tournament.”

For the team as a whole, Boyle said the focus is sticking to the basics while gaining experience every week.

“We’re still trying to get better at the simple little basic stuff. We’re so young and green that we’re getting a little bit better but we got to keep working on the fundamentals,” he said.

Whitefish hosts Polson and Browning on Thursday at 5 p.m.
