Stevensville, Dillon too much for Lady Dogs to handle

The Lady Bulldogs are looking ahead after a tough weekend at the Western A Tip-Off Tournament in Missoula.

Whitefish fell to Stevensville 55-36 on Friday and Dillon 64-16 on Saturday.

Becca Catina led the team with 12 points against Stevensville. Annisa Brown and Lauren Schulz added 11 and 6 for the Lady Dogs.

Brown was the top scorer against Dillon with 7 points.

Head coach Ben Johnson said while the final scores don’t look great, they aren’t a good indicator of how his team really played.

“The score doesn’t show anything. We did some good things,” Johnson said.

Johnson said he’s starting to see more progress with his team’s defensive play, but mistakes need to be cleaned up to start adding some wins.

“We’re starting to pick up the man-to-man defense a lot better. We do keep fighting throughout the whole game, it’s just mistakes we’re causing ourselves that are creating those big deficits,” he said.

Whitefish hosts Bigfork on Friday before traveling to Eureka on Tuesday. Deciphering Bigfork’s tough 1-3-1 zone defense is the priority for the team this week, Johnson said.

“We need to be able to handle that. We’ve got to play tough defense, because they’ve got some good athletes,” he said. “If we don’t play team man-to-man defense we’re going to have a rough night.”
