Dakota Flannery took fourth in the 138 class.

Strong performances from Travis Catina and Dakota Flannery led Whitefish at the Bob Kinney Classic in Superior on Saturday.

Catina took first at 205, defeating Clancy Gout from Libby, and Flannery took fourth at 138 after falling to Peyton Irvine of Thompson Falls.

The Bulldogs took eighth overall. Libby, Thompson Falls and Plains-Hot Springs rounded out the top three teams.

Head coach Ryan Boyle said the effort of his team impressed him and they were close to having more wrestlers in the top four of their classes.

“It’s one of those things where we were hoping to get a couple more placers in there,” he said. “There were some close matches, kids wrestled all three periods and just came up short.”

Boyle said his young team is going to keep gaining experience and momentum with each tournament, but he’s seeing a lot of positives early on in the season.

“We’re being really aggressive. We’re making contact and we’ve been preaching that all year. You have to initiate everything, and they’re doing that,” he said.

Whitefish will travel to Eureka on Saturday for the Buzz Lucey Invitational, and a few select wrestlers will also travel to Coeur d’Alene for the Tri-State Invitational.

Boyle said Whitefish hasn’t participated in the Coeur d’Alene tournament in the past, but he’s looking forward to seeing how the kids stack up to some of the top wrestlers in the Northwest.

“It’s a really tough tournament,” he said. “There’s some good teams there. We’re just trying to go and see if we can compete at a different level with some of our guys.”
