The Whitefish wrestling team got its first taste of action at a Polson tournament this weekend.
The Bulldogs took 17th overall with just 12 points, sending just six wrestlers while five others wait to become eligible.
Head coach Ryan Boyle said he was proud of his wrestlers on Saturday and he’s excited to see the team at full strength at this weekend’s tournament in Superior.
“They wrestled hard,” he said. “We’re going to see [how good we are] Saturday. That’s the first time we’re going to have everybody eligible to get on the mat.”
This year’s team is led by seniors Travis Catina, Anwar Mirza, Eli Taylor, Isaac Watts, Malik Hayden and Patrick McGeady.
While Catina is the team’s only four-year wrestler, Boyle said he expects to see plenty of younger kids step up as the season progresses.
“It’s a super young team as far as experience, but they’re competitive, they’re working hard. We’re kind of hoping toward the end of season that everything comes together,” he said.
The Bulldogs will travel to Browning Thursday for the Quadrangular tournament with Browning, Cut Bank and Conrad competing, and on Saturday they’ll wrestle at the Superior Invitational.
