No one was injured in a fire that ripped through the detached garage of a Whitefish home early Thursday morning.

Whitefish fire crews were called to the blaze on Texas Avenue at 2:30 a.m.

“When we got on scene it was fully involved,” said Whitefish Fire Chief Joe Page. “It became a defensive operation for us.”

Seven Whitefish firefighters worked to keep the blaze from spreading to the nearby home. They were on the scene until 6:30 a.m. The garage is a total loss.

Page said loud bangs heard during the fire were likely from paint cans or gas cans exploding.

“Like in everyone’s garage, there are all kinds of fluids and containers,” Page said.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.

Whitefish emergency crews were assisted by Evergreen, Kalispell and Three Rivers EMS.
