Community: Clean the Fish, Booster auction this weekend

The annual Clean the Fish effort to pick up litter around Whitefish is planned for April 23 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Breakfast will be served to all of the community “litter gitters” at the Glacier Bank parking lot located at 319 E. Second St. Trash bags and gloves will be provided. Designated drivers and trucks will pick up the trash bags and items too big for trash bags that are left along the roads.

Large trash containers will also be available at the Glacier Bank parking lot. Volunteers should be sure to get a ticket during breakfast for the grand prize drawings that will be held during a barbecue lunch. The prizes include two youth mountain bikes compliments of Glacier Bank of Whitefish and Glacier Cyclery. An adults grand prize is a gift card compliments of Glacier Bank of Whitefish. The Whitefish Bulldog Booster Club Auction is Friday, April 22 at 6 p.m. at The Lodge at Whitefish Lake. Tickets are $50 per person and are available at the Whitefish High School office. Ticket includes entry, dinner and a chance at reverse raffle prizes including the $5,000 grand prize. Money raised goes directly to support the 22 activities that are participating. The Whitefish Theatre Company is hosting a spring cleaning day at the O’Shaughnessy Center on Sunday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to noon. Join the theater staff for a day of camaraderie while making the O’Shaughnessy Center shine. Call 862-5371 to sign up then stay for lunch at noon. WTC also will offer food, drinks, tours of the new addition, and a glimpse of the 2016-2017 theater and music season.

Wasabi Sushi Bar and Ginger Grill in Whitefish will host the Whitefish Theatre Company for Community Night on Monday, April 25. A portion of all sales will be donated to benefit WTC’s theatre, music and dance programming and the work the theater does with youth, seniors, and our community. Proceeds from take-out orders and gift cards will also benefit WTC. Wasabi opens at 5 p.m. and it is highly recommended to make reservations at 863-9283.

The Montana Environmental Information Center and Whitefish Review will host a showing of the movie “This Changes Everything” on April 21 at 7 pm at Casey’s in downtown Whitefish.Filmed over 211 shoot days in nine countries and five continents over four years, the film is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change.Directed by Avi Lewis, and inspired by Naomi Klein’s international non-fiction bestseller, the film presents seven powerful portraits of communities on the front lines, from Montana’s Powder River Basin to the Alberta Tar Sands, from the coast of South India to Beijing and beyond. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the movie begins at 7 p.m. Author Douglas H. Chadwick will open the movie with a short reading. Following the movie, Steve Thompson, coordinator of Glacier Climate Action and Roger Sullivan, former board president of MEIC, will host a question and answer session. The Whitefish chapter of Big Sky AFS is sponsoring an information night for all potential host families and students who are interested in being an exchange student. Current host families, teachers, liaisons and others who have helped the current group of AFS students to have a successful year in the Flathead Valley will also be honored

The program will begin with browsing of the international displays set up by the current students in the Flathead Valley who come from Switzerland, Portugal, Germany, Hungary, Brazil, Austria, France, Japan, Thailand and Sweden. Students will then give a short presentation about their country and their experience of being an exchange student to NW Montana.

The program will begin at 6:30 p.m. and go until approximately 8:30 p.m.. Desserts made by the foods classes at Whitefish High and Whitefish Middle School will be served. It will be held in the commons area of the Whitefish High School on Wednesday, April 21. Call 212-0261 or 862-3430 with questions.

A presentation on the West Seventh Street reconstruction project will be held Wednesday, April 20 at 6 p.m. at the interim Whitefish City Hall, 1005 Baker Avenue. Topics include, what to expect during construction, project schedule, traffic control plan and roadway closures. LHC, Inc. is set to begin reconstruction work in early June and complete the project in September, weather permitting. For more information contact the city of Whitefish at 863-2460.

The Whitefish Chamber of Commerce is working with Whitefish High School to organize a job fair for students on Friday, April 22.
