Golf course has second earliest opening
The opening of the Whitefish Lake Golf Course on April 1 was the second earliest date in recent history, according to superintendent Dick Collins. While the season started early it also includes the best golf course conditions in memory, as well.
All of the greens emerged from the winter in excellent shape and are blemish free and rolling great. In most ways the course conditions are much like mid-season with everything green and growing rapidly. A mild winter and good maintenance preparation for winter are the answers to such an excellent start.
Last year we refurbished and re-sodded greens Nos. 1, 7 and 8 on the North Course with T1 Bentgrass and those greens are likewise looking awesome. Barring some strange weather or unforeseen circumstance the new greens will be put into play in May. Players will notice slight, but significant, changes in contours to the refurbished greens. Some of the more severe undulations were eased slightly to better accommodate play and increase potential hole locations.
Photos of all our major tournament champions are on display in the hallway adjacent to the Golf Shop. Thanks to Linda Ray and Tracy Whisenand for their work in helping complete this project to honor all our various champions. As tournaments occur during the season, the photos will be updated to feature the newly crowned champions.
The tournament season kicks off this season with the Ski Patrol Open on Friday, April 29 and the Season Opener on Saturday, May 7. Two person team entries are being accepted in the Golf Shop for the Season Open Tournament. The format will once again be a two-person net best-ball event and will include a lunch as part of the entry fee. Prizes will be awarded based on flights and various divisions. The entry fee is $80 per team for this fun team event and it includes a special tee prize. Grab one of your friends and join us for a fun tournament on the best course in the area.
