Whitefish High School student Heather Luedke won the People’s Choice Award at the Hockaday Museum of Art’s annual New Artists exhibition.

Luedke says the watercolor painting “Elephant Dust Storm” was inspired by nature and her grandmother.

“I grew up around my grandma painting and as soon as I was old enough to learn, she began to teach me,” she said. “Now, every time I paint, I am reminded of her.  I chose to paint this piece because nature is something that is very important to me.”

Luedke is a senior at Whitefish High School, studying art with Mr. Collinsworth.

Voting for the People’s Choice Award was tallied after the opening reception on Thursday. The annual show is a venue for young artists attending local area high schools to show recent works.

The New Artists 2016 exhibition is at the Hockaday in Kalispell through May 7. The museum is located in the cultural district of downtown Kalispell at 302 Second Ave. East.
