Police calls: Shooting menace bear not advised

Whitefish Police calls Sept. 21-27:

Sunday, Sept. 21

10:30 p.m. A resident reported a bear getting into his garbage can. He told police he wouldn’t let the bear destroy his property and that he’d shoot the bear if it returned. Police advised the resident of laws about shooting within city limits.

Tuesday, Sept. 22

8:42 a.m. Report of seaplanes landing on Whitefish Lake. Police contacted the state aviation department and found that Whitefish Lake has no restrictions for seaplanes other than a no-wake zone 200 feet from shore. The reporting party wasn’t satisfied with the response. She was advised to call the FAA to file a complaint.

10:37 a.m. A nail gun was stolen from a job site on East 2nd Street. A disgruntled worker was suspected in the theft.

Wednesday, Sept. 23

2:34 p.m. Marijuana was found in a room at a hotel on Highway 93 West.

5:53 p.m. A resident was bit by a dog on Wisconsin Avenue.

5:57 p.m. A man walking to the market on Wisconsin Avenue reported that an unknown person handed him a backpack and said it was full of marijuana. Police investigated and found the pack only contained clothes and a toothbrush.

Thursday, Sept. 24

5:46 p.m. A West 5th Street resident was issued a citation for barking dogs.

10:05 p.m. A resident was upset about the music and crowd noise coming from downtown.

10:29 p.m. A caller trying to sleep complained about the loud music from a festival downtown.

Friday, Sept. 25

1:44 a.m. A man was found passed out on the side of East 4th Street.

11:28 a.m. Report of a man on Highway 93 South holding a sign that read “F Obama.” He also flipped off a driver.

5:15 p.m. Report of an intoxicated man stumbling into traffic on Spokane Avenue.

Saturday, Sept. 26

2:20 a.m. Report of a man passed out on the sidewalk downtown.

9:55 a.m. Report of a strange man on East 2nd Street who said he was tracking a deer for two days.

2 p.m. Report of a suspicious man in a vehicle watching kids play along Lakeside Blvd. He told police he was charging his phone. He was cited for drug paraphernalia.

5:54 p.m. Report of a man wearing dirty shoes curled up beneath a tree on East 2nd Street.

Sunday, Sept. 27

12:35 a.m. Report of suspicious activity downtown. One person crawled through the roof of a restaurant and let another person in through the front door.

1:12 a.m. A woman was arrested after reportedly trying to break the window of a store downtown.

10:39 a.m. A woman walking her dog along West Second Street spotted a large mountain lion by the river.

1:03 p.m. A Glock was stolen from a vehicle on Edgewood Place.

3:18 p.m. Report of a gun being discharged inside an apartment building on West 2nd Street.

3:30 p.m. A mother black bear and cubs were hanging out near the river at Columbia Avenue.
