May leads Dogs in romp at Corvallis
Quarterback Luke May kept the throttle to the floor Friday as Whitefish thumped Corvallis 55-7 on the road.
The senior tallied touchdown runs from 5, 50 and 6 yards out, and passed for two more as Whitefish improved to 4-1 on the season.
Whitefish scored on their first four drives and the defense held the Blue Devils to nothing but three-and-outs. The mercy clock was rolling with 11 minutes to go in the second quarter as the Dogs marched out to a 41-0 lead.
“We had a different type of focus on Friday,” Whitefish coach Chad Ross said. “We were dialed in from the get-go.”
May was an efficient 7 of 8 passing for 148 yards and carried the ball six times for 93 yards. His throwing strikes went to Brady Staves on a 10-yard score, and to Jed Nagler on a 52-yarder, both in the first quarter.
Junior Derek Kastella had a pick-six interception and Zander Wold busted out for a 90-yard touchdown to cap the rout.
The Whitefish defense held rebuilding Corvallis (0-4) to 30 yards passing and 90 yards rushing.
Ross noted the defensive effort from Jed Nagler, Travis Catina and Alex Curry.
“Those three had one of their best outings,” Ross said.
Overall, the Dogs played a clean game, he said.
“We did a lot of the little things right,” Ross added. “We emphasize being perfect on every play. That’s what we are striving for.”
Whitefish opens Northwest A play on Friday when they host Polson at Memorial Field. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
