He’s arguably the most prolific quarterback in Whitefish football history, and he has the numbers to back it up.

Luke May wrapped up this four-year varsity career as a starting quarterback with statistics that are unmatched in the school record book.

For his prep career, May accumulated 7,825 yards passing and threw for 81 touchdowns. His career completion percentage is nearly 62 percent.

May put up his highest numbers his junior year, throwing for 2,402 yards and 29 scores in 2014. His senior season, however, he had a career-best completion average of 66.83 percent and just three interceptions.

Anyone who has watched May over the years knows he wasn’t just a threat in the pocket. The 6-0, 195-pounder also demoralized teams with long, bruising runs.

May totaled 2,594 yards rushing in his career, with 34 touchdown runs. His senior season was his best statistically as a runner, finishing with 925 yards, 18 scores and 7.17 yards per carry.

Almost never injured, May started every game at quarterback the past four seasons, and played cornerback on defense, as well.

Whitefish coach Chad Ross has seen May mature as a quarterback and team leader since his freshman year.

“He ran a lot as a freshman and was afraid to make mistakes,” Ross said. “But starting his junior year, you could just see the dramatic change in his confidence. [That confidence] gave Luke the ability to allow others to make plays.”

Ross lauded May’s performance in the championship game against Dillon. He ran for a touchdown, threw for another, and recorded two interceptions on defense.

“He made so many athletic plays,” Ross said. “He played the game of his life.”

With plans to throw javelin for the University of Minnesota next year, Saturday might have been May’s final game behind center.

If so, he goes out as a champion wearing the green and gold.
