Track teams reload with speed

Whitefish enters the 2015 track and field season with as much depth as it’s had in years.

About 80 athletes came out for the boys and girls teams, including a strong collection of proven runners who will lead the way.

“Eighty kids is a really nice turnout,” head coach Derek Schulz said. “It’s exciting to have some new faces and some experience coming back on both the boys and girls teams.”

Both the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs placed third at the State A meet last season. Schulz says his teams are working hard to be in contention for more hardware come May.

“Placing at state last year — anytime you’re in the top three that’s a huge accomplishment,” he said. “That’s an outstanding season.”

Whitefish’s goal is the same every year — May matters.

“We put our best team on the track at divisional and will qualify as many kids as possible.”

“We don’t win anything important in March or April. We want steady progress, and hopefully we stay healthy.”

The boys team will be led by senior hurdler Keaton Grove and sprinter Luke Cardon.

“They’ll bring that senior leadership and experience,” Schulz said.

Junior Luke May is looking to defend his state title in javelin. He won the state meet with a personal-best toss of 206 feet 7 inches.

Another junior, Jed Nagler also will be a force in the short distance races and relays.

“Jed came on strong at the end of last year,” Schulz said. “He put himself on the map for a breakthrough year.”

Schulz says there are a half dozen underclassmen who could make some noise, as well.

The Lady Bulldog roster is ready to prove itself as a force in the state. They’ll have their work cut out with All-State sprinter Marlow Schulz now running for St. John’s University in New York City.

Coach Schulz says a few talented runners are ready for breakout seasons to fill the void.

Senior Grace Kurtz enters the season as a contender in the sprints, having placed sixth at state in both the 100 and 200 last year.

Allie Schulz will be a factor in the short distances, and will compete in hurdles and jumping events.

Both Schulz and Kurtz were part of the 400 relay team that set a Class A state record at last year’s state meet.

“We have two sprinters that can really run,” Schulz said.

Senior Sarah Latcham could be a surprise in the middle distance races. The cross-country standout is training for the 800 and 1,600 events.

“She had an outstanding cross-country season and is primed and ready to go,” Schulz said.

He said the 3-mile cross-country distance “is a little out of her wheelhouse.”

“She has a lot of speed,” Schulz said. “I think she can be highly successful this year.”

Whitefish kicked off the track and field season last week with a nice dual performance at Flathead High School.

Schulz said it was the perfect warm-up for the season — almost like a dress rehearsal for the bigger events to come.

“The pressure was really low,” he said. “It was more or less a really hard practice where you wear a uniform.”

Typically, the season begins with the Flathead Time Trials.

“That meet is pretty big and taking our youngest kids can be overwhelming,” Schulz said. “Now we have our feet on the ground.”

He was impressed with the relay teams, with the boys winning both the 400 and 1,600, and the girls taking the 400.

“They did a nice job and will be competitive this year,” he said.
