Students at Whitefish Middle School will be allowed to use smartphones, iPads and other internet-based technology this coming school year in all classrooms.

The school previously allowed individual teachers to determine if smartphones or other devices were allowed in the classroom. The new policy defines the middle school as a “Bring Your Own Device” campus.

The change is an effort to embrace new technology and its potential to make a positive impact on education, said school principal Josh Branstetter.

“Instantly, we have a computer with a search engine at our fingertips,” Branstetter said. “We’re all carrying around these devices, so instead of hiding them, we decided to put them out in the public.”

Smartphones and other devices will be required to be kept “in plain view” while in the classroom.

“If it’s out in open, it is hard to abuse,” Branstetter said.

The policy states that specific guidelines and expectations will be defined by each classroom.

Devices are not allowed to be used during lunch and recess, and are not allowed in locker rooms or restrooms.

Electronic devices without internet are not allowed, such as cell phones that only make calls or texts, iPods and video games. These devices “serve no educational purpose,” the school handbook notes.

Another change to the middle school handbook tweaks a portion of the dress code regarding leggings.

The policy states that leggings or tights can be worn with shorts, dresses or skirts, “that provide adequate coverage.”

Previously the policy required shorts, dresses or skirts, “that are not shorter than 4 inches from the top of the kneecap.”

Branstetter said the school spent “tons of wasted time” dealing with the leggings policy last year.

“We’ve addressed it,” he said. “They can wear them, just provide adequate coverage.”

The middle school student council helped craft the policy.
