Boys tennis makes statement at Polson
The Whitefish boys tennis team made a statement last weekend in taking two duals against top-tier teams.
The Bulldogs edged the defending Northwest A champs of Polson 4-3 on their home court, then topped Dillon 5-2.
Against the Pirates, freshman Max Smyley went 6-1, 6-2 to take down Tim Russell in the No. 1 singles match.
Ethan Potthoff won at No. 3 singles and Cole Turgeon won at No. 4 singles.
Austin Reese and Jack Brandt picked up the Dogs’ lone doubles win at No. 3.
Against Dillon, Smyley found himself in a battle with Mark Waldrup in the No. 1 match. Smyley took the first set 7-6 (7-4), then held off Waldrup again in the second set 7-5.
Nathan Fauth had to work for his win at No. 2 singles, topping Jonathan Leonardson in three tight sets.
Thomas Carloss and Arsenije Gavric scratched out a big win at No. 2 doubles 6-3, 7-6 (11-9) to help Whitefish get the team win.
Whitefish is at the Bitterroot Invite this weekend.
