Belgrade edges Dogs in OT

Another tight battle with Belgrade ended in another tough loss for Whitefish football.

The Panthers sneaked out of the Dawg Pound on Friday with a 29-28 overtime victory. Belgrade has defeated Whitefish its previous three meetings by a combined total of 10 points.

Whitefish (2-1) scored first in overtime with a pass to senior wideout Jack Streibich, but failed to convert on the extra-point attempt.

Belgrade quickly countered with a touchdown and booted the PAT through the uprights for the non-conference win.

Whitefish had its chances, but had two touchdowns called back on penalties.

The Dogs led 22-14 with 7 minutes to go in the fourth when quarterback Luke May connected with Jed Nager on a 42-yard touchdown pass.

Belgrade’s Koby Ruff, however, returned the ensuing kickoff 80 yards for a touchdown. The Panthers punched in a two-point conversion to tie the game and send it to overtime.

Whitefish opened the game with a nice 54-yard TD pass to Streibich in the first quarter.

Belgrade got on the board in the second quarter when a bad snap on a punt by the Dogs ended up as a safety. The Panthers took a an 8-7 lead into halftime.

Brian FauntLeRoy scored on a 25-yard run in the third quarter to give the Dogs a 15-8 lead.

May threw for 323 yards and three touchdowns in the game.

Nagler had 10 catches for 168 yards and a touchdown. Streibich had 84 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

FauntLeRoy led the ground game with 31 yards rushing on five attempts.

The Dogs defense managed to hold Belgrade to 188 yards passing. Whitefish tallied five sacks and 12 tackles for loss.

FauntLeRoy and Chris Park each picked off a pass.

Whitefish travels to Corvallis on Friday for another non-conference game.
