Extra Mile Day honors those who give more

Whitefish has designating Nov. 1 as Extra Mile Day to honor the work of one Whitefish couple and a local nonprofit medical clinic.

“I urge each individual in the community to take time on this day to not only go the extra mile in his or her own life, but also acknowledge all those who are inspiration in their efforts and commitment to make their organizations, families, community, country or world a better place,” Whitefish Mayor John Muhlfeld said.

Muhlfeld recognized Jake and Connie Heckathorn for their contribution to the Whitefish Community Library. He also honored Shepherd’s Hand Clinic, and in particular, Meg and Jay Erickson.

The Heckathorns have spent decades volunteering for the library, including everything from covering books to hosting library volunteer events. They helped plan for, fundraise for, and implement the construction of the downtown library.

They have purchased thousands of dollars of books, material and assets for the library, which includes a special emphasis on children’s books.

The proclamation recognizes the couple as “Being visionaries in helping the Whitefish Community Library be all it can be for our community.”

Shepherd’s Hand Clinic, under the direction of Meg and Jay Erickson, also earned recognition for proving a free weekly community meal, free health care and free dental services. Each month the community meal serves 500 meals and the clinic services more than 190 patients and 50 dental patients.

Last year, the clinic provided $800,000 worth of services to the underinsured and uninsured.
