Speech team second at Polson
The Whitefish speech and debate team kicked off its season with a solid start Saturday at Polson.
The Bulldogs took second place in overall sweepstakes for Class A with 61 points. Two competitors earned first place finishes in individual competition — Abbie Belcher in extemporaneous and Hunter Cripe in original oratory.
Coach Sara Mueller said the kids started out nervous, but gained confidence throughout the day’s competition.
“I asked many students to challenge themselves with new events and difficult pieces, and I know they surprised themselves with the strength of their performances,” she said. “I’m looking forward to an exciting year with powerful returning competitors and a number of promising newcomers who have the work ethic and talent to be successful.”
The team competes in Kalispell Saturday for its next tournament.
Whitefish will host its home tournament on Nov. 22. Those interested in volunteering to judge at the meet are asked to contact Mueller at 862-8650, ext. 342.
