Whitefish volleyball could be on the verge of turning the corner on its season.

With the Dog House thumping on homecoming night, Whitefish showed what its capable of in a tough five-set loss to Northwest A power Polson.

Whitefish took the Lady Pirates the distance before squandering a four point lead in the fifth set. While disappointed in the loss, Whitefish coach Sarah Scott said she saw flashes of a team that has the talent to go deep in the divisional tournament.

“I’ve seen them do amazing things in spurts,” she said. “I want them to do that all the time.”

“They’re starting to realize what they’re capable of. They’re learning to hold themselves to a higher level of play.”

Whitefish followed Thursday’s loss to Polson with another conference loss 3-0 to Columbia Falls. The Lady Dogs remain winless in league play.

Still, Scott says her team is on the right track heading into the back half of the season.

“There is so much talent here. I’m on repeat telling them how good they are,” she said. “Nothing is solidified until the last game of divisional. As long as we are improving, we’ll be right where we need to be.”

Scott praised Myndi Holbrook for her play against Polson. Holbrook led the team with 16 kills.

“I can consistently count on her to go to,” Scott said. “She keeps her head in the game.”

The coach also commended Rachael Seymour and Maura Kalbfleisch.

“Rachael can bring some power and excitement. And I’ve seen a huge level of improvement from Maura.”
