Pilot calendar: WAG Race to benefit dog park this Sunday

The 5th annual WAG race to benefit the Hugh Rogers WAG dog park is set for Sunday, May 18 at 11 a.m. at the dog park. Races include a 12k, 4-mile and 1-mile fun run. Food vendors, ice cream from Sweet Peaks, beer from Great Northern, live music and kids games. Register online at www.flatheadbeaconrunningclub.com.

The PTA’s seventh annual Stumptown Scramble benefiting the Whitefish School District is planned for May 26 at Whitefish Lake Golf Club. On-course prizes, catered food and beverages at every hole. Shotgun start at noon. Awards ceremony at 4:30 p.m. To register or become a sponsor go online at www.stumptownscramble.org.

The Whitefish Women of the Moose will be holding a benefit dinner on Wednesday, May 14 from 5-7 p.m. The “Italian splendor” dinner will benefit the community events support by the Women of the Moose. Tickets are $8 per person. Contact Pat Gilbertson at 862-3943.

The Crown of the Continent Choir and Headwaters Ensemble, with special guests Jack Gladstone and Kate McLaughlin, will perform their season finale and fundraising event “The Love of Nature & The Nature of Love” at the O’Shaughnessy Center. Doors open at 6 p.m. for a wine bar and silent auction, with the concert starting at 7 p.m. Admission is free and donations will be accepted.

Visit Terrapin Farm’s certified organic greenhouses for their 20th annual greenhouse bash on Saturday from 3-7 p.m. There will be live music and farm tours throughout the weekend. The annual Cat-Dog Boxing Smoker to benefit the Glacier Twins is set for Monday, June 2 at 7 p.m. at Memorial Field in Whitefish.

Thirteen bouts are scheduled with Columbia Falls and Whitefish student athletes — both boys and girls — boxing in three one-minute rounds.

Ringside seating is $20 in advance or $25 at the gate. General admission is $10 in advance or $12 at the gate. Tickets available at Hill Brothers in Whitefish, Sportsman & Ski Haus in Whitefish and Kalispell, Napa Auto Parts in Whitefish and Kelly’s Pub & Casino in Columbia Falls.

This month’s Whitefish Chamber of Commerce’s Gone Fishin’ is being hosted by JCCS in Whitefish from 5-7 p.m. Enjoy complimentary refreshments and door prizes. Free and open to the public.

WHS Student Council is sponsoring the 2014 Walk For Life. Registration forms are available at the main office. Individuals may participate for a minimum donation of $10 and teams of five or more may participate for a minimum donation of $8 per person. You must be registered by May 16 in order to participate in this event that is aimed at raising awareness for suicide prevention. It is open to all and will be held at the WHS Track on June 3. T-shirts will be provided to those who pre-register.

The Humane Society of Northwest Montana is holding a matching donation promotion during the month of May. Because of an anonymous donor, any donation during the month of May will be doubled. Spring is the busiest season for the Humane Society creating more financial demands for treating, spay/neuter, feeding and finding homes for dogs and cats in Flathead County. A Glacier Institute course on Glacier’s Harlequins is set for Saturday, May 17 at 8:30 am. The course will be led by instructor John Ashley. He has worked to conserve harlequin ducks in Montana, Alberta and British Columbia for many years. Register for the course by calling 755-1211 or online at www.glacierinstitute.org. This course is $65 per person. Courses are rated for skill level, the “Glacier’s Harlequins” course is rated “easy.” The group will walk about two to three miles along the Going-to-the-Sun Road and the elevation gain will be less than 100 feet.

The spring membership special for season tickets for Flathead Valley LIVE on Stage ends on May 15. The season features Wai Mizutani on violin, Matt Herskowitz playing the Steinway grand piano, Rob Verdi’s saxsational show, which will include members of local high school bands performing with him, and the fiddle/guitar duo of Alex DePue and Miguel De Hoyos. The special spring pricing is adult, $65, seniors age 62 and over $55, students $35 and families of any size $150.
