New sidewalks along a portion of the Highway 93 West reconstruction project are being torn out and replaced this week.

Crews for LHC Construction are removing and replacing the sidewalks between Baker Avenue and the new Veteran’s Memorial Bridge. The concrete needs to be replaced due to surface failure, spalling and flaking, which reduces the durability of the concrete.

LHC is performing warranty work. The sidewalk removal and repairs will be done at no cost to the city of Whitefish or Montana Department of Transportation.

Traffic control will be in place during the work and there will be limited on-street parking on the east side of the bridge.

The highway project to revamp the west entrance to town began last April. Work included replacing the Second Street bridge, adding a center turn lane, installation of a bike path and sidewalk, new retaining walls, decorative street lights, landscaping, construction of a new storm drain system, and replacing sewer and water lines, and buried utilities.

Phase I is slated to be complete in the coming weeks.

Phase II of the project will run from Karrow Avenue to Mountainside Drive. That phase is currently out for bids with a projected start date of July 7.
