Pilot calendar: Whitefish Lake Run on June 28

The 37th annual Whitefish Lake Run is set for Saturday, June 28 at 8 a.m. The 10k race begins on East Lakeshore Drive and ends at City Beach. The 5K race begins and ends at City Beach. Register at www.whitefishlakerun.com. Nearly 40 volunteers are needed. Every registered and confirmed volunteer will receive a T-shirt. Soroptimist International of Whitefish will hold its summer bag sale at the Whitefish Thrift Haus on Saturday, June 28, from noon to 5 p.m. Fill a plastic grocery bag for $5. All proceeds will be donated to area nonprofit organizations with a focus on improving the lives of women and girls. The Thrift Haus is located at 303 First St. in Whitefish.

The Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundation will be hosting a ‘Drink Beer for The Bob’ event on Wednesday, June 25 at the Great Northern Brewing Company in Whitefish. One dollar from every pint purchased that night from 4p.m. to 10 p.m. goes to support the Bob Marshall Wilderness Foundations volunteer efforts on trail work and noxious weeds projects in The Bob.

A “Bear Aware” hike on the Whitefish Trail is planned for June 26 at 6 p.m. Meet at the Lion Mountain trailhead. Explore bear signs and safety along the trail while increasing animal awareness and confidence while travelling in bear country. This family-friendly outing will involve an easy 1 to 2 mile hike. The hike will be led by Kim Corette who has several decades of experience working and recreating in bear country. “Facebook:101” is the topic of the next Whitefish Chamber brown bag lunch-n-learn. The seminar is July 3 from noon to 1 pm at the Whitefish Chamber. Ranette Sorenson, of Flathead Destinations, will facilitate this session. Topics covered include:

• Why it is important for your business to have a presence on Facebook.

• Step-by-step instructions on creating a business Facebook page.

• Dos and Don’ts of posting – hint: it’s not all about you.

The annual Soroptomist Park neighborhood potluck and clean up party will be held Wednesday, June 25 at 6 p.m. Bring a potluck dish to share, plates and utensils, work gloves, and gardening tools. For more information, call Jan Metzmaker at 862 7960.

The Big Sky Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society presents Whitefish Woody Weekend III on June 27-29. The event, hosted by the Lodge at Whitefish Lake, will feature 37 classic wood boats from all over the Pacific Northwest, including six award winners from the 2013 ACBS International Show. There will be a wood boat cruise around Whitefish Lake on June 27 at 8 p.m. Boats will be on public display June 28 at the Lodge between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. The boats will participate in a poker run around Whitefish Lake on June 28. The events are free and open to the public.

Flathead Valley Community College will offer a two-part family kayak adventure July 11 and 13. Instructed by Anne Feast Clark, this introduction to sea kayaking class is paced for individual beginners as well as parents or grandparents who wish to bring along youths 12 and older. The course will focus on the many ways paddlers can partner up from boat loading and launching to assisted re-entry in deep water following capsize. Day one of the class will meet from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at The Summit Medical Fitness Center pool. Day two will meet from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Echo Lake near Bigfork where students will gain basic skills maneuvering around the islands. Participants can bring their own  kayaks or rent equipment. The Whitefish Veterans Support Team will sponsor Master Sergeant Mark Vomund and his family on a visit to the Flathead Valley July 23. Vomund’s 25 year Army career includes two decades of service in Special Forces and multiple deployments into the combat zones of Afghanistan and Iraq. In 2010, in Kandahar, Afghanistan, while on a combat mission, he and his military working dog, Herco, were severely wounded by an improvised explosive device. Today, with Herco by his side, Vomund uses his experience to bring awareness and reduce the stigma of traumatic brain injury and post traumatic stress disorder. The July 23 event at the Whitefish Moose Lodge is free and open to the public. Doors open at 6:30 pm. There will be an ice cream social following the presentation.
