Gates planned at Grouse Mountain Estates

Grouse Mountain Estates is planning to add permanent gates at each of the subdivision’s entrances.

Grouse Mountain Estate homeowners association president Kevin Kirwan recently contacted the city about installing a gate at Mountainside Drive and another at the east entrance, city manager Chuck Stearns noted in a staff report.

“Mr. Kirwan told me that continuing through traffic on their roads had become too much and there was a lot of speeding, so they were now planning to install permanent gates,” Stearns said.

The subdivision proposed in January to install a temporary gate to prevent through traffic during reconstruction of Highway 93 West.

According to Stearns, the subdivision was platted prior to the city enacting regulations that prohibit gated communities.

“So their installation appears to be legal and is grandfathered in for compliance,” Stearns said.

Councilor Richard Hildner was uneasy about the permanent gates, saying he is “philosophically opposed” to gated communities.
