Police: zero tolerance on illegal fireworks

Whitefish police will take a “zero tolerance” approach to illegal use of fireworks during the upcoming Fourth of July holiday.

“I’ve told my officers to issue citations. There will be no warnings,” Whitefish Police Chief Bill Dial told the Pilot.

The tough stance on illegal fireworks comes after Whitefish City Council voted in February to shorten the city’s fireworks season by one day. Fireworks within city limits are now allowed only on July 3 and July 4 from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

The city also raised the minimum fine for violations to $300, giving police more teeth in enforcement. Violation of the fireworks law carries a maximum fine of $500.

Dial is encouraging residents to call in fireworks violations with an exact location, and if possible, an identity of the suspect

"We need the citizens to help us police our community," Dial said.

Call the police department at 863-2420 and then select option two to reach dispatch.

The updated ordinance will be posted at all fireworks stands leading up to the holiday.
