WLGC championship expanded

This year’s club championship, Aug. 16-17, is being expanded with great prizes and opportunities to win for all players. While a true club champion will be crowned in several categories from junior to the new “super senior” division, there will also be extra benefits for everyone. Every entry will be given a great collection of tee prizes from our corporate sponsors.

The Whitefish Lake Golf Club board has made a commitment to make the championship a premier event and to encourage our members to join in the fun for two days.

This year players will be allowed to select their playing partners on the first day of the tournament. The super senior division is designed to encourage our older players (me included) to participate.

Local entertainer, Nick Speer, will perform on the deck for Saturday nightís gala gathering after the shotgun start. Food will be included in the entry fee, which will remain the same even with all the added bonuses.

All members are urged to register for the Club Championship and join the fun regardless of your playing ability. This is your event as a member and only you can help us make this a special weekend of golf.

Mens State Amateur

Brandon McIver repeated as the Montana State Men’s Amateur Champion this past week at Whitefish Lake Golf Club. McIver’s margin of victory was eight strokes better than his closest competitor as he shot rounds of 69, 68, 67 over the North Course at WLGC.

Having observed Brandon since he was a high school freshman at Billings West, I’ve always thought he had exceptional talent and he has proven it once again. As a player for the University of Oregon he has the opportunity to be coached by Casey Martin and compete in the Pac10 Conference.

If you follow golf, you realize that just a few weeks ago Brandon played in the U.S. Open at Pinehurst and though he did not make the weekend cut, he did shoot a great 73 on day two of the Championship. It would not surprise me at all to see him on the PGA Tour in the future. He has all the tools including great composure.

We offer a special thanks to our talented staff for once again running such as great State Championship and also to our members for sharing their course with the competitors from across the state.

Senior League and Ladies Association

Hats off to our volunteers that run the Senior Men’s league and ladies association. Paul Jeremiassen and Jack Shigo are the coordinators (Geeszars) for the men’s senior leagues and Linda Smith is the driving force for the ladies Association at WLGC. Thanks to all our volunteers for helping make Whitefish Lake Golf Club so special.
