Eighth-graders invited to WHS orientation
The excitement is building among Whitefish High School’s staff and students in anticipation of welcoming next year’s incoming freshman class. The Class of 2018 will reap the benefits of innovative efforts gaining momentum at WHS, including the excitement of moving into the new high school in the fall of 2014.
In order to better inform the eighth-graders who will form the Class of 2018, WHS staff and students are hosting an interactive, informative freshman orientation fair, designed to showcase the opportunities available to the incoming students over the next four years. They wish to welcome the eighth-graders and their parents, inviting them to gather information, ask questions and engage in discussions about everything WHS has to offer.
Students, as well as staff, are preparing displays and presentations to highlight courses and programs available at WHS. Participants will be able to gather information on academic offerings, as well as extra-curricular opportunities. Eighth-grade students will be invited to “meet your mentor,” and to hear about the wide array of clubs and activities that will make their high school experience more memorable.
Counseling plays a vital role in the successful entry into high school. Freshman guidance counselor Tina Corwin sees her objective this way: “At WHS, it is our desire to create a smooth and seamless transition to high school.”
Guidance counselors will be talking to orientation participants about the Student Assistance Program, as well as class registration information. This week, Tina will also be meeting with eighth-grade students in their classrooms to discuss course selection and address concerns.
In addition to the academic and social aspects of WHS, the high school building project is certainly an incredible opportunity for all incoming freshmen and their families. Eighth-grade students recently travelled to WHS to tour the new building project and tours specifically for freshman parents are planned as a major part of the freshman orientation fair.
The fair will take place at Whitefish High School on Tuesday, Feb. 18, beginning at 7 p.m, and will last about 90 minutes. For more information, please contact Principal Kerry Drown or Counselor Tina Corwin at 862-8600.
