WTC presents 'The King and I'

| December 10, 2014 9:00 PM

The Whitefish Theatre Company presents the family classic “The King and I” as their holiday show at the O’Shaughnessy Center in Whitefish. This renowned musical continues on Dec. 12, 13, 19 and 20 at 7:30 p.m. and on Dec. 14 and 21 at 4 p.m.

This classic musical by Rodgers & Hammerstein tells the charming story of Anna, the British governess brought into the court of Siam to tutor the King’s many children. Once within the splendor of the Royal Palace, Anna and the King grow to understand and, eventually, respect one another, in a truly unique love story. With one of the most glorious scores ever written, much-loved melodies from the show include: “Getting to Know You,” “I Whistle A Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” and the unforgettable “Shall We Dance.”

In presenting “The King and I,” Whitefish Theatre Co. guest director Rebecca Schaffer has been examining the way that history and stories from history are written.

“The story is derived from the actual memoirs of Anna Lenowens, who became a school teacher to the children of King Mongkut of Siam in the early 1860s,” says Schaffer. “It has been interesting to examine the origin of Anna’s story that has evolved into “The King and I” as we put together this stunning production. While “The King and I” is the essence of musical theatre, it takes insightful consideration to bring this story of cultural differences to the stage.”

Anna is played by Amy Chisholm and the King is played by Mikey Winn. Also contributing to the design are Musical Director Karla West, scenic artist Rob Akey, and lighting and sound designer Colin Arakaki. Costumes are designed by Lonnie Porro and Marie Merkel.

Tickets are $20 for adults, $18 for seniors, and $8 for students with reserved seating. Tickets can be purchased at the Box Office, 1 Central Ave., Whitefish, or by calling 862-5371. Tickets can also be purchased online at www.whitefishtheatreco.org.

The show is sponsored by Whitefish Credit Union. The sponsor for the student outreach performance on Dec. 12 is McGarry’s Roadhouse.
