Wailers take local hockey tourney

The Whitefish Wailers rallied from two goals down to win the Whitefish Womens Tournament elite division ice hockey championship Saturday at the Stumptown Ice Den.

Wailers defender Cody McCarthy scored the game-winner in sudden-death with just 24 ticks on the clock to get the 3-2 victory over the Nelson Drillers.

The Wailers topped Pincher Creek 4-0, blasted the Kootenai Wildcats 7-1 and shut out Fernie 3-0 to earn 34 points in round-robin play.

The Whitefish Mud Puppies made it to the final in the recreation division before losing 3-2 to the juggernaut Cranbrook Shooters.

The Mud Puppies were solid in round-robin play, racking up 22 points with a 2-1 record. They topped Mystery Team and Crowsnest Pass to get into the finals.

There were six teams competing in both the elite and recreation division. This was the 11th annual womens tournament.
