The annual business meeting of the Whitefish Lake Golf Association is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 12 with a 9:30 a.m. start and hosted brunch for members of the association.

The board of directors will discuss the current year’s finances, committee reports and any plans for course improvement in 2014. Two board members will be elected to replace Parker Kelly and Jody Fee whose terms expire at the end of the year.

Currently two women are vying for the ladies vacant seat on the board and one man has filed for the open seat for men. Leslie Washer and Cindy Stein are running as is John Peschel for three-year terms on the board.

Absentee ballots will be available in the Golf Shop starting on Sept. 28.

Only Tier One members are allowed to vote in the election and business matters of WLGA.

New Green on No. 6 North

Work will began Oct. 16 on the new green for No. 6 of the North Course. The new green will be about 20 percent larger than it is currently and extend to the east further making the approach shot easier.

The cart path will be moved further to the east and out of play more, while the right greenside bunker will be relocated to behind a portion of the green in the back right.

Back in the early 1980s this green was obscured from the tee by a mound that only gave the player a view of the top of the extra long flagstick and it only played a maximum of roughly 130 yards. With the added options of more tees, the green will be more accommodating with a much larger surface.

Players are asked to avoid the construction area by going around the sixth hole to the seventh tee. The present No. 5 will play as a par 4, temporary green about 350 yards from the existing tee while the fifth green will play as a par 3 of about 150 yards or less. No. 6 will be totally out of play during the process and is expected to reopen in the spring.

Renovation of No. 2 North

Work will begin on the No. 2 hole of the North Course next week. The green is scheduled to have a new sod type installed and the putting surface soften slightly.

The location of the green will remain the same as will the shape and elevation.

The need to remove the top four inches of greens mix is based on lab analysis that stated the too much fine materials were present to allow adequate penetration of water, nutrients and gases exchange to reach the rootzone that also added to the firmness of the surface.

The new sod, T1 Bentgrass, will be the same cultivar as was laid on the No. 5 green a couple of years ago. A temporary green will be cut to use this fall and early next spring.

Fall Pro-Am

The 2013 fall Pro-Am is scheduled for this weekend with play on the South Course both days. The popular event includes roughly 30 teams from around the region including Canadian Professionals and their teams. At least one local WLGA member will be drawn to complete the teams for the tournament.

Members wishing to participate should contact the Golf Shop staff, 862-5960. Teams will consist of a Golf Professional and four amateurs participating in a two-person net best-ball.

World’s Hardest Tournament

The Annual World’s Hardest golf tournament will follow the Annual Meeting on Oct. 12. The two-person teams will play the South Course with very unique hole locations and tees. This is fun event and requires players to hit shots from lies that they might not experience otherwise. Find a willing partner and register soon in the Golf Shop. 862-5960.
