Record day for Dogs at A.R.M.

A nasty headwind on the homestretch didn’t faze Whitefish’s top runners Saturday at the annual Akey, Rosenberg, Murphy (ARM) Invitational as the Bulldogs set a pair of meet records.

“It was a high quality performance for us,” Whitefish coach Derek Schulz said. “We had some really good times and we were really competing, which is what the coaches like to see.”

Whitefish’s boys 400 relay team scratched their way into the history book by breaking Havre’s decade old ARM record by .02 seconds. Sean Foley and Jed Nagler put the Dogs in position in the first 200 as Iaian Cameron and Logan Harwood brought home the victory with a 44.22.

“I’m really excited for them,” Schulz said. “Those relays are special to our program.”

Lady Bulldog sprinter Marlow Schulz also broke a long-standing meet record during her dominate day on the track. The junior won the 100-, 200-, and 400-meter dashes.

Schulz took the 400 in 58.02 seconds to beat the ARM record set in 2007 by Misha Trotter of Hamilton. The time qualified Schulz for state, where she won the event last season.

Overall, the boys team finished with 111 points and in second place behind Glacier. The girls tallied 61 points for fourth place. With 15 teams in attendance and a line up of busses stretching the length of Pine Avenue, this year’s ARM was the largest ever.

The boys 1,600 relay of Walter Holliday, Jace Kalbfleisch, Harwood and Cameron capped the successful day for the Bulldogs with a first place run of 3:34.56.

The Lady Bulldogs also won both the 400 and 1,600 relay, making it a clean sweep for Whitefish in the relays.

Phoebe Guercio, Allie Schulz, Sarah Latcham and Marlow Schulz cruised in the 400 relay with a 50.95. Later in the day, Latcham, Emily Sullivan, Allie Schulz and Marlow Schulz would dominate the 1,600 relay with a 4:18.14.

Individually, Harwood led the way for the boys with wins in the 200 (23.00) and 400 (52.22.)

Schulz commended both Marlow and Harwood for their performances.

“They both have experience and have trained accordingly and are still improving, which is critical,” Schulz said. “We want to improve through May. They understand how that works.”

Schulz said Sean Foley’s versatility has become a key component to the Bulldog’s success. Foley won the pole vault, took second in long jump, made the finals in the 100 and was on the winning 400 relay team.

Gage Smith picked up valuable points in the field with a second-place shot put throw of 46-11, while Keaton Grove continued his successful season with a second place run in the 110 hurdles and third in the 300 hurdles.

Schulz thanked the dozens of volunteers who came out and helped keep the event running smoothly.

The Whitefish Booster Club and PTA raised funds for a new timing system that was used for the first time Saturday. Previously the races were all hand timed. With the new technology a camera system is used that is more accurate.

“It takes our whole program to a different level.” Schulz said.

Whitefish competes Saturday at the Archie Roe in Kalispell.
