Double Dip held on new bike trails

Racers clad in body armor and full-face helmets tested their downhill endurance last weekend at the new bike park at Whitefish Mountain Resort.

About 35 racers competed in the inaugural Double Dip Downhill race held on the new Kashmir trail. Riders dug into deep banked corners, launched off jumps and navigated through technical stretches of rocky terrain along the west slope of Big Mountain.

Andrew Flaschenreim posted the fastest time of the day with a 2:58.

Ray Peacock was second fastest with a 3:01, and Zack Sedivy took third with a 3:05.

The event was part of a grand opening to celebrate the completion of the resort’s expanded bike park.

Five new trails were added this year, more than doubling the downhill freeride trails on Big Mountain.

Construction of the new trails began last fall. Resort crews and local trail builder Pete Costain, owner of Terraflow Trails, put in 150 excavator days and 1,200 man hours to build more than 26,000 feet of trail. Costain also built the Runaway Train freeride trail on Big Mountain in 2008, and has shaped much of the Whitefish Trail.

The new trails include more than 100 berms and over 50 jumps.
