Victims in head-on crash remain in critical condition

Two of the people involved in a head-on collision July 12 south of Whitefish remain in critical condition.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper John Underwood told the Pilot on Friday that a 68-year-old Whitefish man driving a Subaru sedan, and his passenger, a 92-year-old Kalispell man, are in critical condition.

The 23-year-old Columbia Falls man driving a Pontiac involved in the crash is in stable condition at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.

According to Underwood, the Columbia Falls man was traveling southbound on U.S. 93 South when he crossed the center lane and hit the northbound Subaru head-on in front of the Three Dog Ranch pet boarding business.

Whitefish emergency crews extricated the driver of the Subaru after cutting off the roof of the vehicle using the Jaws of Life.

The Columbia Falls man wasn’t wearing a seat belt.

Underwood says an investigation into the accident is ongoing.

“We’re still digging into possible factors as to why this happened,” he said.
