MatCats primed for divisionals, go 2-1 in home duals
The Columbia Falls wrestling team had a solid week on their home mat as they got in some final matches prior to this weekend’s divisional tournament in Frenchtown.
On Jan. 24, the MatCats pummeled Whitefish, recording 10 pins in a 78-4 blowout at home. Cameron Linstead (105), Kaleb Gravelin (112), Shonn Roberts (119), Seth McCall (125), Colton Gove (130), Josiah Osborne (135), Chase Ramberg (140), Cody Walters (152), Jacob Burgess (160), Matt Erhart (215) and heavyweight Spencer Ross all recorded pins.
The match of the night was between Cameron Peterson (171) and Kyle Bowerman. Peterson was behind late in the third and scored three points to edge out Bowerman in the final minute, 13-12.
On Jan. 26, the MatCats beat Libby 48-30 in a dual but lost to Frenchtown later in the day, 45-33.
Gravelin, Roberts, McCall, Ramberg, Peterson and Spencer Ross all got wins against the Loggers. Roberts, McCall, Osborne, Ramberg, Shaffer and Ross came away with wins against Frenchtown.
The MatCats now set their sights on the Northwest Class A divisional tournament this weekend in Frenchtown.
“I like what we have,” coach Jessie Schaeffer said. “We have some good depth … we’re going to be a threat. We need to come together as a team in one weekend.”
The MatCats will look to shore up some injuries this week and make a run. Frenchtown is the team to beat, and Polson is a threat as well. Schaeffer said he’d like to have 17 qualify for the state tournament in Billings.
