Crisis line training

The Abbie Shelter and the Violence Free Crisis Line will offer victim advocate volunteer training at the United Way conference room at the Gateway Community Center in Kalispell. Classes include Tuesday, March 5, from 6-9 p.m., Interpersonal Violence 101; Thursday, March 7, from 6-9 p.m., Power and Oppression; Saturday, March 9, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., DV Day; Tuesday, March 12, from 6-9 p.m., Rape and Sexual Assault; Thursday, March 14, from 6-9 p.m., Community Resources; and Saturday, March 16, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Taking Crisis Line Calls. Free videos

Citizens for a Better Flathead will present three short videos about consumer choices, gardeners, farmers and locally grown food at the Flathead Valley Community College’s Arts and Technology Building on Thursday, Feb. 28, from 7-9 p.m. Judy Owsowitz, of Terrapin Farms, a local organic produce farm, will speak on the importance of seed saving following the videos.

Writing contest

The Authors of the Flathead is sponsoring the 2013 High School Student Writing Contest for students in grades 9-12. Students can win $300, $200 and $100 for short stories and $125, $75 and $50 for poems. Mail works to 2013 Student Writing Contest, Authors of the Flathead, P.O. Box 7711, Kalispell MT 59904-0711. Pied Piper Performance at SMS

Students from Lakeside Elementary School and Somers Middle School will perform “The Pied Piper” along with the Missoula Children’s Theatre on March 2 at the SMS gym.

The Missoula Children’s Theatre residency in Somers is presented by the Somers Lakeside PTA with support from the Dennis and Phyllis Washington Foundation, sponsorships from local businesses, organizations and support from individuals.

Republican trip to Helena

The Flathead County Republican Women are taking a bus trip for both women and men to Helena on March 14 and 15 to have dinner with legislators and participate in St. Patrick’s Day festivities. The remainder of the day will be spent at the Capitol attending hearings, Senate and House floor sessions, and visiting with the legislators before returning to the Flathead Valley on Friday evening.

Canyon fundraiser

A fundraiser for the Gateway2Glacier nonprofit group will be held at the Belton Chalet in West Glacier with a showing of the award-winning documentary film “The Lookout” on Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m. Admission will be $6 individuals and $15 families.
