A connecting road between Dodger Lane and Veterans Way is planned to be built during the upcoming reconstruction of East Second Street.

City Council voted unanimously to build the road so residents in that neighborhood won’t be isolated during construction efforts.

“The need for a new route between East Second Street and Armory Road stems from the fact that the residential neighborhood east of Cow Creek does not have an efficient, interconnected street network,” public works director John Wilson noted in a staff report.

The new road will also provide better access for emergency situations.

The 700-foot extension will be a two-lane road without curbs or gutters. A new water main will be added, along with storm drainage improvements.

“We will build a road that allows us to come back later and make it fully up to city standards,” said Wilson.

Crews will also prepare a base for a future bicycle and pedestrian path along the east side of the road.

The road will slightly curve to the east to preserve a stand of large trees.

Wilson estimates the entire project will take about four weeks to complete. Work is not slated to begin until the summer of 2014.

The project is estimated to cost $320,450.
