Man arrested after pointing a gun at his daughter

A 62-year-old Martin City man faces a felony assault with a weapon charge after he allegedly pointed a loaded gun at his daughter.

Edmon Shumpert faces up to 20 years in prison and a $50,000 fine if convicted. He posted a $5,000 bond and was released after a week in the county jail. He has a public defender and must wear a SCRAM device.

According to court records, Shumpert’s two daughters went to his home in Martin City on July 9 and found him intoxicated and agitated. They both tried to calm him down, but when they tried to take away his beer, Shumpert grew even more agitated and allegedly pointed a gun at one of the daughters.

The daughters told sheriff’s deputies who responded that Shumpert said he didn’t care if she was his daughter, he would shoot her. Shumpert allegedly admitted to deputies that he drank eight beers before the incident. The deputies found the firearm, which had one round in the chamber and five in the magazine.

Shumpert was arrested and taken to the county jail. His bail was initially set at $25,000. He pleaded not guilty on July 25 and has an omnibus hearing scheduled for Oct. 30.
