Meeting focuses on cemetery options

The city of Whitefish is looking for input on the selection of a site of a new cemetery.

The cemetery committee is holding an open house on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall.

Information will be presented on two possible sites for a new cemetery and comments will be taken. The two proposed sites are southwest of the city’s wastewater treatment plant along the Whitefish River and on the southern portion of the city’s public works shop off of West 18th Street.

Results form a soils and groundwater testing at the two city-owned sites will be available at the meeting.

The cemetery committee has met since April 2011 to evaluate possible locations for a new public city cemetery. Established in 1917, the current Whitefish Cemetery has reached capacity and no new lots are available for sale. There is not space to expand the current site.

A mail survey earlier this year found that that most respondents want a new cemetery.

The committee is expected to soon make a recommendation to the City Council on a choice for a new cemetery.
