Wolf trapping

Slots still remain for Montana Fish, Wildlife and Park’s final Wolf Trapper Certification Classes which will be held in Kalispell on Saturday, Oct. 13, and Saturday, Dec. 8. There are 30 slots remaining for Oct. 13 and 59 for Dec. 8. These are the final opportunities to register for the classes in Region 1 this year. Prospective trappers can register online at www.fwp.mt.gov by clicking on “Wolf Trapping Certification.” Montana’s wolf trapping season will begin on Dec. 15.

Trout talk

The Flathead Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited will present Dan Magers, author and long-time steelheader, for a talk on his new book, “Striking Steelhead,” at the Fish, Wildlife and Parks offices on North Meridian Road, in Kalispell, on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 7 p.m. His book describes 22 years of fishing for and studying the habits of steelhead on the Clearwater River in Idaho.

Fish plan

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks extended the comment period for their draft statewide fisheries management plan to Oct. 26. Film festival

The Flathead/Kootenai Chapter of the Montana Wilderness Association will present its annual film festival at the O’Shaughnessy, in Whitefish, on Friday, Oct. 26, at 7:30 p.m. and at the Teakettle Community Building, in Columbia Falls, on Sunday, Oct. 28, at 2 p.m. Eleven selections from more than 110 films in the 11th annual South Yuba River Citizens League Wild & Scenic Film Festival will be presented. Door prizes donated from local businesses will be given away. Food, beer, wine and soda will be available for purchase. Tickets are $10 at the door. Avalanche workshop

The second annual Northern Rockies Avalanche Safety Workshop will take place at Grouse Mountain Lodge, in Whitefish, on Saturday, Oct. 13, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. with avalanche professionals and backcountry recreationists. Six speakers will talk about forecasting, theory, information processing, emergency decision-making and other up-to-date information. Cost is $20 with pre-registration and $25 at the door.
