Winter conditions limit east side access to Logan Pass

Glacier National Park officials report that recent winter weather conditions have limited motorized vehicle access on the Going-to-the-Sun Road to Logan Pass on the east side of the Park.

The recent storm dumped 14 inches of snow at the Logan Pass Visitor Center parking lot and continued low temperatures have caused ice to build up on the Sun Road at higher elevations.

Because of icy road conditions, the Sun Road will be gated to motor vehicles on the east side at the Jackson Glacier Overlook. Park officials anticipate the east side of the Sun Road will reopen to Logan Pass once temperatures increase and road conditions change.

As scheduled, the last day to access Logan Pass for the season from the east side will be Sunday, Oct. 14, depending on the weather.

The west side of the Sun Road is closed to motor vehicles at Avalanche Creek to allow for accelerated road rehabilitation work. Hikers and bikers are allowed unlimited access past Avalanche Creek this weekend, Oct. 6-7. Some of the asphalt on the road above Avalanche Creek has been removed, so hikers and bikers should use caution.
