Brutal weather doesn't slow Dogs at state

Rain, snow, wind — the elements were raw at the state Class A track meet in Bozeman last weekend. It didn’t seem to bother Whitefish as the Bulldogs managed to bring home a handful of gold medals.

The Lady Bulldogs took third place overall with 54 total points. Corvallis defended their state title with 110 points.

Sophomore Marlow Schulz was at the top of her game, sweeping the sprint-distance races and helping the 400-relay team to another win.

The 100-meter race was a true photo finish. Schulz and Glendive’s Faith Kjelstrup both were clocked at 13.09. Officials reviewed video, which showed Schulz just edging out a win with a final lean across the finish line.

Schulz claimed the 200 finals with a 26.13 and won the 400 with a 57.07. She was fifth in the triple jump.

All together, Schulz helped tally 50 points for the Lady Bulldogs, including the relay races.

Whitefish’s sprint team of Schulz, Amanda Foley, Marijka Devirer and Phoebe Guercio clipped Corvallis in the 4x100 to take gold with a 49.76. The Lady Dogs were second in the 4x400 relay with a 4:09.60.

Senior Foley took fifth in the 100 sprint and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles to round out Whitefish’s scoring.

The boys finished their season impressively in fourth place with 40 points. Corvallis won the title with 99.5 points, followed by Billings Central and Columbia Falls.

Dakota Beatty and Keaton Grove went 1-2 in the 110-hurdles to score major points for the team. Beatty was clocked at 16.30 and Grove was a hair back at 16.39.

Logan Harwood seemed to get his legs back right in time for state and took third in the 400 with a 50.92.

Gage Vasquez capped his breakout season on the track with a third-place finish in the 800. He was clocked at 2:03.59, trailing only standouts Derrick Williams of Columbia Falls and Colby Henderson of Corvallis.

Jace Kalbfleisch tallied points for the team with his fifth-place run in the 3,200.

Whitefish took second place in the 4x400 relay with a 3:28.78, just behind Billings Central’s 3:28.37.
