Lady Bulldogs divisional champs

The defending state champs in Corvallis better take note — Whitefish’s track teams could be peaking at just the right time.

The Lady Bulldogs ran away with a team title at the Northwestern A divisional track and field meet last weekend in Columbia Falls. Whitefish tallied 205 total team points to easily win the meet. Polson finished a distant second with 132 points.

The boys team, meanwhile, seemed to come out of nowhere to take second place at the meet with 126 total points. Columbia Falls won the meet with 174.5 points.

It was Whitefish’s depth and determination on both the girls and boys sides that carried them to impressive results.

“The kids were really focused on these late-season meets,” Whitefish coach Derek Schulz said. “Almost everyone over-achieved — that’s spectacular.”

Whitefish will send 28 competitors to the state meet in Bozeman — 16 boys and 12 girls. Most of the athletes are qualified in multiple events.

Coming as no surprise, Marlow Schulz and Amanda Foley dominated the sprint distance races, going 1 and 2 in the 100, 200 and 400. Foley also won the 300 hurdles and took second in the long jump with a state-qualifying leap of 15-11.5, while Schulz won the 800 and the triple jump with a leap of 34-6.5.

Foley tallied 42 points for the team, and Schulz grabbed the maximum of 50. Coach Schulz noted that Bulldog track legend Chris Hicks is the only athlete he can remember earning the maximum 50 points at a meet in 2005.

Together Foley and Schulz will compete in 10 individual events at state this weekend in Bozeman. They also run in the 400 and 1,600 relay events.

Equally as impressive were the performances in the field from the Lady Bulldogs.

Eviann Reynolds and Abby Strellnauer finished 1 and 2 in the shot put. Strellnauer won discus, while Reynolds took third. Bekah Weaver made a splash in javelin with a winning toss of 106-8, just ahead of Reynolds who took second. Strellnauer was fourth in javelin.

Sophomore Phoebe Guercio made a statement at divisional, taking third in triple jump and fourth in long jump. She also helped pace the 400 relay team of Guercio, Ella Kobelt, Sarah Latcham, Marijka Devivier to a second-place run.

Nicole Brist took fourth in both long-distance races, helping the team rack up important points.

Ella Kobelt grabbed second place in the 100 hurdles, while Sarah Latcham took third in the 800.

“I’m proud of the girls. They turned in some remarkable efforts and times,” Schulz said.

Going up against state-favorite Columbia Falls on their home track, the Bulldogs boys team put together a stellar two days on the track. They managed to take second place without a single individual first-place winner — a true testament to the depth of their roster.

Their lone win came in the 1,600 relay. Luke Cardon, Jace Kalbfleisch, Logan Harwood and Gage Vasquez teamed up to run a 3:32.22. The Dogs were in second place on the final lap when Harwood pulled away in the last 10 meters.

The 1,600 meter run may have been the highlight of the meet. Trailing only top runner Derrick Williams of Columbia Falls, Vasquez, Kalbfleisch and Fischer Gangemi made a bold push on the final stretch to finish 2,3 and 4 and rack up 18 team points.

“That race displayed the spirit of our program,” Schulz said.

Vasquez then ran a gutty 800 to take third place with a 2:02.87, just ahead of Luke Cardon who took fourth.

In the 400, Harwood and Cardon took second and third. Cardon, a freshman, also took fifth in the 200 to cap a great first divisional meet.

Whitefish was strong in the hurdles, with Keaton Grove taking second in the 300, and Dakota Beatty and Grove going 3 and 4 in the 110.

Sean Foley and EJ Havens went 4 and 5 in pole vault. Foley qualified for state after clearing 13 feet.

Whitefish’s Chris Forrest and Jake May went 3 and 4 in javelin to add to the team score. Schulz said May’s toss put him in the state meet and set the stage for the Bulldogs success at divisional.

“He really got us going,” Schulz said.
