Boys run away with Northwest A crown

Wildcat Daniel Jones broke the divisional and school record in the javelin, and teammate Derrick Williams won three races as the Columbia Falls boys track team easily won the Northwest A divisional track title last week at home.

Jones’ first javelin throw was more than 196 feet, but his next throw sailed 202 feet, 6 inches, breaking the divisional record by two inches. Kyle Baker, of Libby, set the previous mark in 2005.

One week earlier at a home dual with Glacier High School, Jones threw the javelin more than 190 feet to break the school record held by Nate Thompson.

Jones said he was trying to break the overall school record, which is more than 205 feet but was set under former javelin standards. Setting the mark brought a wide smile to his face.

“Coach just told me to go out there and have fun,” he said.

Jones also took third in the shot put and second in the discus.

Williams won the 800, the 3,200 and the 1,600 meter runs with times of 1:55.65, 9:38.42 and 4:34.70 respectively. He also took fourth in the 400.

Josiah Osborne also had a great day, winning the 200 in 23.63 and the 100 in 11.43.

Colin King stepped up big and won the long jump with a leap of 21-2.25. The Cats took first through third in the event.

Anthony Correa won the 400 with a time of 51.07, but he strained his hamstring the next day after running the 100. He iced down the injury and was able to walk. Correa is a big part of the team’s hopes to repeat at the state tournament. Not only does he run the 400 and 200, he’s a key leg in the relays.

On the girls side, the Wildkats took third. Jinise Osborne won the 3,200 with a time of 11:56.84. Cortney Niese won the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.43 to lead the Kats.

This year’s state tournament could come down to Corvallis and Columbia Falls on the boys side like it did last year.

Corvallis handily won the Polson ABC meet, where the two teams first met, but many of Columbia Falls’ best boys didn’t compete in all the events.

The state Class A meet will take place in Bozeman with the 400 trials starting at 10:25 a.m. on Friday. The meet continues Saturday.
