Cats host divisional meet this week

For the first time in years, Columbia Falls will host the Northwest A divisional track meet. The meet is scheduled to begin Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. and will run through Saturday.

“To be able to host the meet on our own track is awesome,” said coach Jamie Heinz.

The boys’ team is favored to win the event and the girls have a good shot to take second, Heinz said. Whitefish is favored on the girls’ side.

The teams had two more tune-up meets last week — a dual against Glacier at home on May 11 and the Polson ABC meet May 12.

Both the boys and girls squads had several first place finishes at the dual. Derrick Williams missed setting a new school record in the 3,200 meters by a second. Glacier’s Troy Fraley built a sizable lead, but Williams closed the gap in the last lap to make a charge. Fraley won the race in a stiff wind by three seconds. The wind helped Daniel Jones — he threw the javelin more than 190 feet to take first place.

At Polson, the boys took third and the girls took fifth, but Columbia Falls didn’t compete in every event. Corvallis won the meet — the Blue Devils, at least on paper, look to be the deepest Class A team in the state, Heinz noted. They’ll prove tough competition at the state meet.

Williams won the 800 at Polson with a time of 1:55.68 — about a second off the school record set by Devon Schmidt. On the girls’ side, Jinise Osborne won the 3,200 with a time of 11:49.25.

While many athletes have already qualified for state competition, Heinz said the philosophy at the divisional tourney is to compete hard unless someone is injured.

“We need to use divisionals to build momentum for state,” he said.

Take a weekend off and it’s hard to simply turn the jets back on a week later, he noted.
