The Columbia Falls tennis teams wrapped up their regular seasons last week. On May 10 the girls edged Whitefish 4-3 while the boys won 5-2.

The next day the girls beat Libby by the same margin.

“Overall, our girls played their best matches of the year against Whitefish,” said girls coach Jerry Smalley. “It was (also) great to get a win against Libby.”

The Kats will send Gabrielle Stenger, Natalie Law, Emma Covill and Gabby Keller to the divisional tournament this week in Polson for singles play. On the doubles side, look for the teams of McKenna Emmerich and Micinze Christopherson, Kira Kamrud and Kierstan Wendt and Courtney Seward and Hailey Sapa to vie for a spot at the state tournament in Great Falls May 24-26.

“Progress in tennis isn’t a straight line,” said Smalley. “It’s a series of steps and, right now, these 10 girls are our best players.”

On the boys side, coach Gary Yee gave Parker Johnson and Miroslav Zvyagelskiy a break from doubles play heading into divisionals.

The boys still played well, as each notched victories against Whitefish opponents.

The pair will play doubles as the No. 1 seed at the divisional tourney. Brian Marcille, who is playing sharp tennis, is the No. 2 seed at divisionls.

“I expect the boys to do well,” Yee said.

Matches are scheduled to start at 10 a.m. Thursday. The tourney is scheduled for three days, but Yee said it will end in two if they can get all the matches in. Thunderstorms and a chance of showers are in the forecast for each day.
