Cats shine at Archie Roe track

The Columbia Falls boys track team had a stellar performance against tough AA competition at the Archie Roe track meet on May 5 in Kalispell.

The Cats had several first-place finishes and took third overall. Daniel Jones won the discus with a throw of 143-05. Anthony Correa won the 200 and 400 meters with times of 23.48 and 50.99 respectively. Josiah Osborne won the 100 meters with a time of 11.54.

Derrick Williams had a late charge to win the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:18.63. Williams edged Flathead High School’s Zach Perrin by just under two seconds and Glacier High School’s Troy Fraley by just under five seconds. All three are friends and run together frequently.

The Cats also won the 1,600 relay with a time of 3:27.24. Osborne, Williams, Luke Kazlauskas and Correa ran for the Cats. Osborne also took second in the 200 with a time of 23.5.

Conditions weren’t ideal for the meet. There was a cold wind most of the day, and later it rained.

The girls took 10th as a team, but still had some nice efforts.

Jinise Osborne was third in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:39. Courtney Neise was fifth in the 300 hurdles with a time of 53.28.

“I’m happy with the performances,” coach Jamie Heinaz said. “Our team steps up and performs in big meets like that.”

Taking third for the boys was a big accomplishment as the teams head down the stretch.

“Mentally, they’re ready for the end of the season, where things matter the most,” Heinaz said.

That team also competed in the non-scoring Ken Good meet in Whitefish on May 1.

Trevor Wobschall won the 110 meter hurdles with a time of 16.94, and the boys won the 400 relay. On the girls side, Samantha Mundel won the 1,600 with a 5:50.64, and Neise won the 100 hurdles with a time of 17.84.
