Sprinters lead Lady Dogs at A.R.M.

Other schools are finding it tough to hang with the Lady Bulldogs in a flat-out sprint.

Led by their duo of catch-me-if-you-can sprinters, Whitefish’s girls track team took second overall Saturday at the A.R.M. Invite in Whitefish. The team finished with 75 points. Glacier High School won the meet with 90 points.

Senior Amanda Foley continued with her dominate season by winning both the 200 and 400 races. She took second in the 100 after finishing in a tie with Polson’s Anna DiGiallonardo at 12.94.

“She is having a stellar season and she deserves it,” Whitefish coach Derek Schulz said. “She’s had a great career here and has a lot of talent. It’s really coming together for her. It’s beautiful to watch her run.”

Sophomore Marlow Schulz is finding her legs again after missing the beginning of the season with mono. Schulz was third in the 100 with a 13.24 and second in the 200 with a 27.24.

“She’s giving it everything she’s got,” coach Schulz said. “There’s no way she is 100 percent, but she’s going at it with everything in her tank. That’s hard psychologically and physically. I’m really proud of her for doing everything she can to help the team.”

Foley and Schulz teamed up with sprinters Phoebe Guercio, Mirjka Derivier to win the 400 relay with a 51.74, just edging Polson. Schulz calls the relay races a good indicator of the team’s depth.

“Relays are incredibly important,” he said. “They are the heart of the team.”

In the long-distance 3,200 race Nicole Brist took second place with a 12:35.54.

Abby Strellnauer was third in discus and fifth in javelin.

“Abby has come on lately,” Schulz said. “All three of her throws on Saturday were season bests.”

The boys team finished in seventh place with 34 points in the field of 15 teams.

Gage Vasquez won the 800 after surging ahead on the second lap to take the event with a 2:06.84. While known as a stand-out basketball player and wide receiver for the Bulldogs, Vasquez is putting together a good season on the track.

“That was such a great race,” Schulz said. “From a coach’s point of view, having a guy like Gage is a huge blessing. We need him more than he needs us. His focus is on other sports. Track is not his first love, but he’s still out there busting his tail to help the team. We really appreciate it.”

Luke Cardon was second in the 400 finals with a 53.54.

Fischer Gangemi was fifth in the 1,600 with a 4:49.84, teammate Jace Kalbfleisch was sixth with a 4:50.74. Kalbfleisch also took third in the 3,200 after a strong push to the finish. On the final stretch he was passed, but made a surge to take back the third place spot in the final five meters.

“Jace is a gritty kid,” Schulz said. “Placing at that meet, with that caliber of competition, is exceptional. It’s not always about getting first. His effort is what we want in our program.”

Schulz said the boys team is on track for the state meet in May.

“I’m really happy with the boys,” he said. “We’re not loaded with talent as we have been in past years, but we’re bringing some kids along just about right.”

Overall the A.R.M. was a success for the community, Schulz said.

“It’s one of the bigger meets in Montana,” he said. “Teams from as far away as Havre attend. They must like the meet to come from that far. I’m proud of our school for that.

“It’s a classy meet, and the reason is because of Colleen Sullivan and Jackie Fuller. They do all the leg work. You see things at our meet you don’t see at other meets. We had 20 volunteers and community members at the finish line helping out. You don’t see that other places.”
