School board explains mill levy election

School elections are coming up on Tuesday, May 8, 2012. This year, school elections will include voting for school trustees and voting on a district mill levy.

There are two school board seats coming open and voters will choose from a field of five candidates. Additionally, a mill levy request is appearing on the ballot for both the elementary and high school districts.

What is important about this levy request is that it will not raise taxes. Other school budgets will see a reduction in mills levied in an amount that will offset the voted levy.

Your School District 6 trustees understand the current economy and do not want to add any more taxes to our property owners. The elementary district levy request will be for $91,544 and the high school district levy request will be $81,985.

With successful votes, next year’s general fund budgets will still be about $58,000 below this year’s. The funds will be used for supplies, text books, technology, equipment and other non-personnel needs.

This will be the school district’s first voted levy since 2008. Again, the total number of district mills levied in support of our school and individual district taxes in support of our school will not increase from this school year to the next 2012-2013 school year as a result of a successful mill levy vote.
