Lady Dogs sweep Kats in doubles
With a sweep on the doubles side, the Lady Bulldogs handed rival Columbia Falls a 5-2 tennis dual loss April 24 at Columbia Falls.
Megan Danczyk and Lindsey Viscomi rolled to a two-set 6-0, 6-1 victory over Gabby Keller and McCinze Christopherson at No. 1 doubles.
Haley Craven and Ryan Chauner teamed up at No. 2 for an easy two-set win and Anna Carpenter and Maggie Frankino won at No. 3, 6-1, 6-1.
Whitefish coach Patrick Dryden said he can’t remember the last time Whitefish swept Columbia Falls in doubles.
“We really dominated,” Dryden said. “Columbia Falls has had some good teams over the years.”
Sloan Ellis tallied a hard-fought three-set win at No. 2 singles. Ellis went 6-3, 4-6, 7-6 to edge out McKenna Emmerts.
Caroline Carbo was on the losing end of another three-set battle 6-7 (5), 6-2, 7-6 (5), but Dryden was impressed with the tenacity shown in both matches.
“It was good experience for two sophomores,” Dryden said. “I feel like tie breakers make you a mentally tougher competitor. We could end up in some tie breakers at divisional.”
Mackenzie Thomas cruised 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles over Hailey Sapa.
Friday, Corvallis handed the Bulldogs a 5-2 loss on the road.
Whitefish was experimenting with some different lineups in the non-conference dual. Eight of 13 varsity players were out of the rotation while on a DECA trip.
Simone Craft teamed up with Craven to get a win at No. 2 doubles, and Frankino and Lauren Cain won at No. 3 doubles.
Saturday at the Bitterroot Invite, Danczyk and Craven teamed up in doubles and took third place overall. The duo beat a team from Darby 7-5, 6-2, then topped a team from Butte Central 7-6 (5), 6-1. They lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Hamilton 6-1, 6-1.
“That is a very strong Hamiliton team,” Dryden said. “It’s good to get a shot at them.”
Frankino and Cain beat Butte Central at No. 2 doubles, then lost to Corvallis in quarterfinals. In a consolation match against Stevensville they won 6-1, 6-1.
“It was a good win for them,” Dryden said. “They really played well, it all clicked for them this weekend. It should give them confidence going into last month of the season.”
Whitefish hosts Polson on Friday.
