Glacier Twins have rough season opener

The Glacier Twins AA Legion baseball club took some hard knocks last weekend as they kicked off the 2012 season. The Twins were shut out twice in four losses to Helena and Missoula.

At Memorial Park on Saturday against Helena, the Twins bounced back from a 13-0 loss in the first game to tighten up the scoreboard in the nightcap. The Twins put together a solid rally attempt after finding themselves down 6-3 in the bottom of the seventh.

Robert Simmons reached on a hard-hit grounder up the middle and moved to second on a passed ball.

Corey Davis then singled to left field, moving Simmons to third. Pinch-hitter Nick LaGrandeur stepped up and smashed an RBI to left field to make it 6-4, but the rally stalled with men left on base.

Despite the loss, Twins coach Scott Murray was pleased with their comeback effort.

“These guys don’t quit, no matter how far they’re down,” Murray said. “That just shows their true character.”

At Missoula, three pitchers for the Mavericks combined for a 19-0 shutout in the first game.

The Twins rebounded again in the second game and took an early 4-1 lead. A big 12-run inning for the Mavs in the third frame put the game out of reach.

Peter Seymour was 2-for-3 at the plate with two RBIs.

“The number of errors was way too high, and that really hurt us against the Mavs,” Murray said. “We booted the ball around. We need to learn to play together as a team.”

The Twins travel to Libby on Thursday.

“They’re a solid team,” Murray said. “It will be good for us to play a high caliber A team.”
